A practical system for creating visuals that tell the truth and reveal the story
Introduction
This toolkit helps you do two things:
- Create visuals that tell a clear, honest, decision-ready story.
- Recognise when a visual hides part of that story, even unintentionally.
It builds on the PSDDW framework and the mnemonic
Poppy Stole Dad's Dragon Whistle:
- Present the value
- Set the context
- Define good
- Define bad
- Why it matters
Once you remember Poppy and the whistle, you remember the structure.
1. The PSDDW Core
1.1 The five elements
Present the value
Highlight the number that matters. Avoid decoration.
Set the context
Title, legend, labels. Remove guesswork.
Define good
Show the target or healthy range.
Define bad
Show danger zones, thresholds, limits.
Why it matters
Logic, risk, cost, customer impact — the reason the reader should care.
1.2 Full step-by-step example: Bringing PSDDW to life
A simple chart becomes a complete story. (this was a presentation)
Step 1 — Present the value ~35%.


Step 2 — Set the context
Title: ‘Percent of fruit in my diet.’
Now we know what the number refers to.

Steps 3 and 4 — Define good and define bad
In this example
- A minimum acceptable threshold
- A target zone
- A too-high zone
Only now can the reader judge what 30% means.

Step 5 — Why it matters

Explains the thresholds:
- Aim for ~25% fruit
- Below 15% → missing nutrients in fruit
- Above 45% → missing nutrients outside fruit
This is the ‘why’.
The number finally supports a decision.
2. Choosing the Right Chart (Fast)
2.1 Chart selection at a glance
- Bar chart → comparing values at a moment in time
- Line chart → showing change over time
- Column chart → small category comparisons
- Band chart → showing acceptable ranges
- Scatter plot → relationships between variables
2.2 When not to use…
Cumulative graphs
Mask real movement unless accumulation is the story.
Pie charts
Only useful when one segment dominates.
Multiple Y-axes
Confusion traps. Avoid where possible.
Log axes

2.3 Golden rules
- Axes should start at zero unless clearly justified.
- Never mix scales unless labelled with painful clarity.
- Units must be obvious and consistent.
3. How to Avoid Misleading Charts (Often Unintentionally)
3.1 Common clarity pitfalls
- Non-zero baselines exaggerate or flatten movement
- Compressed axes create fake drama
- Missing date windows hide timing
- Smoothing removes important spikes
- Truncating ranges hides context
3.2 Checklist before publishing
- Does the axis start at zero?
- Is the scale consistent?
- Are time periods complete?
- Does smoothing distort meaning?
- Is cumulative data labelled as cumulative?
4. How to Read Charts (So You Don’t Get Misled)
4.1 Five checks in three seconds
- Where does the axis start?
- What is the unit?
- What is the timescale?
- Is this cumulative?
- What is the denominator?
4.2 Spot the missing denominator
Any ‘per something’ metric is meaningless unless the something is present.
4.3 The partial-story problem
Ask what the chart is not showing:
- revenue but not cost
- averages but not count
- growth but not baseline
