About me, Frank Contrepois

Hi, I’m Frank Contrepois, the person behind Coblan.

If you’ve ever seen a bald guy with big round red glasses talking about FinOps and context, that’s probably me.

That's me
That's me

I’ve spent years helping companies understand cloud costs, and one thing became clear: FinOps isn’t just about data. It’s about people, power, and context.

I’ve worked as an executive and a board director, earned a diploma in non-executive directorship, written code, and managed large production environments. That mix of strategy, governance, and hands-on tech keeps me grounded. I can move between the boardroom and the terminal without translation.

Over time, I’ve come to understand the context behind most of the personas in the FinOps framework: how engineers, finance teams, executives, and product owners each see value, risk, and control. That’s what makes FinOps work in the real world: knowing what matters to whom and why.

I love learning new things, sharing what I discover, and turning complex ideas into something clear and useful. That’s the spirit behind Coblan: always be learning and sharing.

I write, talk, and sometimes rant about how cloud money really moves: from vendor earnings calls to FinOps tool strategies, to the politics that shape how teams make decisions. When I find something worth exploring, I build small, simple tools that help others see it too.

You can browse the writing by topic, follow practical how-to paths, or listen to shorter pieces on the podcast.

A lot of my recent work also connects to Protect the Doers, my thinking on leadership, management, and building organisations where useful work can actually happen.

Coblan is my way of learning in public and helping others make FinOps fit their world, not the other way around.
