If you are not under pressure from your bosses to use AI to do FinOps, then it will happen soon anyway. The big daunting task we have is determining what can we delegate to AI, what should we keep managing ourselves, and what is in between. This question inspired me to create a trust matrix for AI and FinOps.

The trust matrix is a classic two by two matrix that assesses two factors: verificability and stakes. On one axis, we have verificability, which refers to whether we can check the results, and on the other axis, we have stakes, which indicates the consequences of errors. This framework defines four possibilities:

  1. High Stakes & Low Verifiability: Here, humans need to be heavily involved and should ideally handle the work themselves.
  2. High Stakes & High Verifiability: In this scenario, AI can assist with a portion of the work, but FinOps practitioners must review the entire output to ensure accuracy.
  3. Low Stakes & Low Verifiability: AI can take on most of the workload, with humans only checking a sample of the results for quality assurance.
  4. Low Stakes & High Verifiability: Fully delegate this work to AI, as the consequences of errors are minimal and results can be easily verified.

To utilize the matrix effectively, you first select a capability, such as data ingestion. You can then identify a specific task within that capability, like investigating data quality issues. The matrix will indicate if human judgment is necessary or if AI can handle the task, along with links to the FinOps Foundation’s resources for deeper insights.

This adaptable matrix allows you to tailor it to your organization’s context. If you believe the stakes or consequences differ in your practice, you can adjust the parameters, and the matrix will update accordingly.
